Passus octauus / [septimus]
de Visione .
C
Truþe herd telle her-of ; and to peers sente
to taken his teem ; and tilie þe erthe
And purchase him a pardon ; a pena & a culpa
For him & ffor his eyres ; ffor euere-more after
and bade him holde him at home ; and erien his leyes
and alle þat holpen him to erie ; to sette or to sowe
Or ony oþer myster ; þat myȝte peers auayle
pardon with peers plowman ; truþe haþe i-graunted
kyngis and knyȝtis ; þat kepen holy chirche
and ryȝtffully in rewmes ; rulen þe peple
fol. 34rfol. 34r
han pardon thoruȝ purgatorie ; to passe ffull lyȝtC
with patriarkis & prophetis ; in paradice to be ffelawe
Bisschoppis y-blesside ; if þei ben as þey shulden
legistres of boþe þe lawez ; þe lewide þer-with to preche
In as moche as þei mown ; amende alle synffull
arne pyres with þe appostelis ; þis pardon peers schewyth
And at þe day of dom ; at þe hie deys to sitte
Marchauntes in þe margyne ; hadden many ȝeris
And non a pena & a culpa ; þe pope nolde hem graunte
For þei holden not her halydaies ; as holi chirche techeþ
And ffor þei sweryn be her soule ; and so god muste hem helpe
aȝeins clene concience ; her catell to selle
and vndir her secrett seel ; truþe sente hem a lettre
That þei shulde bigge boldely ; þat hem likid beste
And sythen selle it aȝeyn ; and saue þe wynnynge
And amende mesondeux þer-myd ; and mysseyse ffolk helpe
And wikked weyes ; wyȝtlyche hem amende
And do bote to brigges ; þat to-broken weren
Marien maydenes ; or maken hem Nunnes
pore peple and presoneris ; ffynde hem her lijflode
And sette scolers to scole ; or to summe oþer craftis
Releue religion ; and rente hem better C
And I shall sende ȝou my-self ; Seynt myhel myn archaungell
Tha{.}t no deuyl shall ȝou dere ; ne fferre ȝou in ȝoure doynge
And wite ȝou ffro wanhope ; if ȝe wulle þus worche
And sende ȝoure soulis in-to sauyte ; to my Seyntis in Ioye
þenne were marchaundis merie ; and weppeten ffor Ioye
And preysed peers þe plowman ; þat purchaced þis bulle
Men of lawe leest pardon had ; þat pleseden ffor mede
For þe sauȝter saueþ hem not ; swyche as takyn ȝiftis
And namely of Innocentes ; þat non yuel kunnen
Super Innocentem munera non accipies
Pledours shulle pyne hem ; to plete ffor swiche & helpe
Prynces and prelatis ; shulde paye ffor her trauaile
fol. 34vfol. 34v
A regibus et princibus erit merces eorumC
And many Iustices and Iuroure ; wolden ffor Ion do more
þanne pro dei pietate ; leue þou noner
And he þat spendiþ his speche ; and spekiþ ffor þe pore
That is Innocente and nedy ; and no man appaireþ
Comfortiþ him in þat caas ; with-ouȝtyn coueytise of ȝiftis
And schewiþ lawe ffor oure lordis loue ; as he it haþe lerned
schal no deuyl at his deþe-day ; deren him a myte
þat he ne worþ saue his soule ; þe sauuter bereþ wittenesse
Domine quis habitabit in tabernaculo tuo
and to bigge water ne wijnd ; ne witt ne fiere ne ferþe
These ffoure þe ffader of heuene ; made to his ffolde in comune
These ben truþis tresore ; true ffolk to helpe
That neuer shall waxe ne wanye ; with god him-selue
whan þey drawyn vn-to þe deþ ; Indulgences wolden haue
his pardon is ffull pitit ; at her partinge hens
þat ony mede of mene men ; ffor his motinge takiþ
ȝe legistres and lawyers ; holdyn þis ffor truþe
That if þat I lye ; matheu is to blame
For he bade me take ȝou þis ; and þis prouerbe me tolde
Quodcumque vultis vt faciant vobis homines facite eis
Alle leuynge P laboreris ; þat leuen with her handis
That trueliche taken ; and trueliche wynnen
And leuen in loue and in lawe ; ffor her lowe hertis
Han þe same obsolucion ; þat sent was to peers
Beggers ne bidders ; ne ben not in þe bulle
But if þe suggestion be soþe ; þat schapeþ hem to begge
For he þat beggiþ or bit ; but if he haue nede
he is ffals with þe ffende ; and deffraudiþ þe nedy
And also be-gyliþ þe gyuer ; aȝeynys his wille
For if he wiste he were not nedy ; he wolde it gyue anoþer
þat were more nedy þan he ; so þe nedyeste shulde be holpyn
Caton kenneþ me þus ; and þe clerk of stories

Cui des videto ; is catonnys techingeC

And gregori was a good man ; and bad vs ȝeuen alle
{.}That asken ffor his loue ; þat vs alle leneþ
Non eligas cui miserearis ne fforte pretereas illum qui meretur accipere
Quia in-sertum est pro quo deum magis placeas
For ȝe woten neuer who is worþi ; and god wott who haþe nede
In him þat takiþ is þe trecherie ; if ony treson walke
For he þat ȝeueþ ȝeldeþ ; and ȝarkiþ him to reste
And he þat biddiþ borwiþ ; and bringiþ him-self in dette
For beggers borwyn euere-mo ; and her boruȝ is god almyȝty
To ȝelden hem þat ȝeuen hem ; and ȝit vsure more
Quare non dedisti pecuniam meam ad mensam vt ege veniens cum vsuris exigere & cetera
For-þi bidde not ȝe beggers ; but if ȝe haue nede
For so may bigge him bred ; þe book beriþ wittenesse

Satis dyues est qui non ; indiget pane
late vsage be ȝoure solace ; of seyntis lyues redinge

Iunior fui etenim senui & non vidi iustum derelictum nec semen eius querens panem & cetera .
For ȝe leuen in no loue ; ne no lawe holdyn
Many of ȝou ne weddyn nouȝt ; þe wymmenP ȝe with delyn
but as whilde bestis with we-he ; & worþ vp & worchen
and bringen fforþe barnes ; þat bastardis men callen
Or þe bak or summe ban ; he brekiþ in his ȝouþe
and sithen gon ffaiten with her fauntis ; ffor euere-more after

Her penaunce P & her purgatorie ; here on þis erthe

alle in two lynes it lay ; & not a leef more
And was wrettyn ryȝth þus ; in wittenesse of truþe
Et qui bona egerunt ibunt in vitam eternam qui vero mala in ignem eternum

Fuerunt michi lacrime mee panes die ac nocte
and but if luke lye ; he lereþ vs be ffoulis

Ne soliciti sitis ; he seiþ in þe gospell

And how the prest impugnede it ; with two propre wordis
And I haue no sauoure ; in sompnewarie . ffor I see it ofte ffaile

To sette sadenesse in sompnewarie ; ffor Sompnia ne cures

A poke ffull of pardon þer ; ne prouyncialis lettris
