Þauh y sete by my-self / suche is my grace /
Y haue folowed þe in faith / mo þan forty wyntur
And wissched þe fol ofte / wat Dowel was to mene
And consailled þe for cristesake / no creature to by-gyle
Noþur to lye ne to lakke / ne lere þat is defended
Ne to spille speche / as to speke on ydul
And no tyme to tyme / ne trewe þing to teonen
Lowe þe and to lyue forþe / in þe lawe of holychurche
Þan dost þow wel with-oute drede / ho can dobet no force
Clerkes þan connen al / y hope þei can do betere
Ac hit sufficit to beo saue{t}d / and beo suche as y tauhte
And for to louye and lene / and lyue wel and by-leoue
Is y-cald Caritas kynde loue in englissche

¶ Ac grace is a gras þer-fore / to don hem eft growe
Ac grace groweþ nat / tyl good wyl gynne reyne
And woky þorgh goode werkes / wyckede hertes .
¶ Ac er suche a wil wexe / god hym-self worcheþ
And sent forth seynt espurit / to don loue sprynge
Spiritus ubi wlt spiratN
So grace wiþ-oute grace of god and goode werkes
May not beo / beo þow syker / thauh we bydde euere .
¶ Cleregie comeþ but of syht / and kynde wit of sterres
As to beo bore oþur by-gete / in suche constellacioun
Þat wit waxit þer-of / and oþer wirdes boþe .
Wltus huius seculi sunt subiecti vultibus celestibus .
Sa grace is a gyft of god / and kynde wit a chaunce
And clergie a connynge / of kyndeswit techynge
¶ And ȝut is clergie to comende / for cristes loue more
Þan eny connynge of kyndewit / but clergie hit rewle
¶ For moyses witnesseþ þat god wrouht / in ston wiþ his fyngur
Lawe of loue oure lord wrouht / longe er cryst were
And cryst cam and confermede / and holykirke made
¶ And in sond a signe wrot / and seyde to þe iewes

And medle we nat muche wiþ hem / to meouen eny wrathe

And do we as dauid techeþ / for doute of godes veniaunce
Nolite tangere cristos meos / & cetera
¶ For clergye is cristes vicory / to conforte and to curen
Boþe lered and lewed were lost / if clergie ne were
¶ Kyndewitted men han / a clergie by hem-selue /
Of cloudes and of custumes / þei contreuede mony þinges
And markede hit in heore maneres / and musede þer-on to knowe
And of þe selcouþes þat þei seyhen / here sones þer-of þei tauhte
¶ Thei heolden hit For a hy science / heore sotylites to knowe
Ac þrow here science sothly / was neuere soule y-saued
Ne brouht þrow here bokes / to blisse ne to ioye .

And seyde here wordes and wysdomes / ne was but a folye
As to þe cleregie of crist / thei countede hit but a tryfle
Sapiencia huius mundi / stulticia est apud deum .
¶ For þe hye holygost / schal heuene to-cleue
And loue schal leope out aftur / in-to þis lowe eorthe
And clannesse schal cachen hit / and clerkes schul hit fynde
Pastores loquebantur ad inuicem & cetera .
¶ Hit spekeþ of richemen / riche men rith nouht / ne of riche lordes
But of clennesse and of clerkes / and keperes of bestes

And boþe naked as a nedle / here non heuegour þan oþur
¶ Þat on hath connynge and can / swymmen and dyuon
Þat oþer is lewede of þat labour / & lernede neuere swymme

Of goode and of wik / kynde was þe furste
He seyh hit and suffred hit / and seyde hit beo scholde
